Infrared photoelectric switch is both on-beam and reflective. The reflective photoelectric switch is reflected by the infrared light emitted by the photoelectric switch, and is received by the photoelectric switch to determine whether an object exists. If an object exists, the photoelectric switch receives infrared rays, and its contacts act, otherwise its contacts are reset.​
