Product’s description


The ABB TU838 is a Module Termination Unit (MTU) in the ABB S800 I/O system. It provides the physical interface and termination for I/O modules in distributed/ modular control systems.

It supports up to 16 I/O channels for field-signal termination.The TU838 distributes the ModuleBus signal to the attached I/O module and passes the address/position shift

to the next MTU in the chain. This means it acts not just as a passive terminal block

 but also part of the bus addressing architecture.

Q1: What exactly does the TU838 do in an S800 I/O system?
A: The TU838 acts as the termination and interface unit for one I/O device (one MTU plus one I/O module) in the S800 I/O system. It provides the field-signal connections, fused power

outlets, process-power terminals, the ModuleBus connection to the I/O module, and also propagates the addressing (position) to the next MTU in the chain. 


Q2: How many I/O channels can it handle, and what are the electrical limits?
A: It supports up to 16 I/O channels. The maximum rated voltage is 50 V, and the maximum current per channel is 3 A. 


Q3: What kind of field wiring or power outlets does the TU838 provide?
A: It gives fused transducer power outlets (for example 2 × 4 fused sensor power outlets), process-power

terminals, and signal terminals. Two channels may share one fused transducer power terminal

in some configurations. Process power may be connected to two

individually isolated groups (if the I/O module supports it). 


Q4: Can I mix different types of I/O modules with the TU838?
A: Yes, the TU838 is designed to host different kinds of I/O modules (analog, digital)

within the S800 I/O system. The mechanical keying helps ensure the

correct module is inserted. However you must ensure compatibility

of the I/O module with the MTU’s channel count,

wiring.
